Our Take

What makes Andrew's Cove Campground special

Andrew's Cove Campground is a small, shaded retreat in the Chattahoochee National Forest near the Bavarian-themed village of Helen, Georgia. The ten sites are nestled under a dense canopy of hardwoods along a mountain stream, creating a cool, green enclave that feels remarkably wild for a campground just a short drive from one of north Georgia's most popular tourist towns. The signature attraction here is the 1.9-mile Andrews Cove Trail, which begins right at the campground and climbs through a rich cove forest of tulip poplar, hemlock, and rhododendron to a junction with the Appalachian Trail on the ridgeline above. That direct connection to the AT makes Andrew's Cove a favorite among hikers and backpackers looking for a comfortable night before or after a section hike. The trail is moderate in difficulty and rewards the effort with a lush, waterfall-studded landscape that peaks in beauty during spring wildflower season and again when fall color transforms the canopy in October. The campground is open roughly from April through November. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring, with vault toilets on-site. There are no hookups or potable water. Sites are first-come, first-served and tend to fill on autumn weekends when leaf-peepers descend on the area, so plan to arrive early on Fridays during October. Midweek visits and spring trips offer a much more relaxed pace.
