Our Take
What makes BAD BEAR CAMPGROUND special
Sitting at 5,100 feet along the scenic Highway 21 corridor, Bad Bear Campground occupies a beautiful stretch of ponderosa pine forest beside Mores Creek, roughly 48 miles northeast of Boise in Idaho's rugged backcountry. The campground's memorable name only adds to its charm — this is a place where the forest feels wild and close, and the sound of the creek running over smooth granite boulders sets the tone for every stay. Mores Creek is the centerpiece of the experience here. Wading, swimming in natural pools during the warm months, and fishing for mountain whitefish and trout are all popular pastimes. The surrounding forest invites leisurely hikes and off-road exploration, and the Boise National Forest trail system is extensive enough to keep avid hikers and mountain bikers busy for days. Summer is the peak season, with July and August offering the warmest water temperatures for creek play, though June and September bring fewer crowds and gorgeous shoulder-season light. The campground works beautifully for families with kids who love splashing in the water, as well as for couples and small groups wanting a straightforward forest-and-creek getaway without the fuss of a resort. Its location along Highway 21 also makes nearby hot springs and Idaho City easy to reach for a day of exploration.
