Our Take

What makes Belmont Park special

Belmont Park is a primitive campground along the Tombigbee River near Livingston in west-central Alabama. The setting is classic Deep South bottomland, where towering hardwoods draped in Spanish moss line the riverbanks and the air hums with birdsong and the steady rhythm of flowing water. It is the kind of place where time slows down and the natural world takes center stage. The campground is managed for hunting and fishing access, making it especially popular during deer, turkey, and waterfowl seasons. The Tombigbee River and its surrounding oxbow lakes provide excellent fishing for catfish, bass, and bream, and a small boat or canoe opens up miles of quiet water to explore. Birders will appreciate the diversity of species that inhabit the riparian corridor, from herons and egrets to warblers passing through on migration. Facilities here are minimal, which is part of the charm. Expect primitive camping with no hookups, limited or no potable water, and basic sanitation. Come prepared to be self-sufficient. The campground is accessible year-round, though spring and fall offer the most comfortable temperatures and the best fishing. Summers are hot and humid, and insects can be fierce, so bring repellent and plan accordingly. Livingston is nearby for fuel, groceries, and supplies. For hunters, anglers, and paddlers looking for an uncrowded riverside camp with genuine Southern character, Belmont Park delivers a no-frills outdoor experience that is hard to find elsewhere.
