Our Take

What makes Big Meadows Reservoir Campground (South Central CO) special

Big Meadows Reservoir Campground rests high in the San Juan Mountains of southern Colorado, about 11 miles west of the town of South Fork and not far from the charming community of Del Norte. With 44 sites arranged around a scenic mountain reservoir, this campground blends easy water access with the kind of high-country atmosphere that makes Colorado's high country so irresistible. The reservoir itself is stocked with trout, and fishing from shore or a small boat is one of the main draws here. Nearby Wolf Creek Pass is a popular scenic drive, and the broader area provides access to hiking trails, mountain biking routes, and wildlife viewing. Elk, mule deer, and the occasional black bear frequent the meadows and forests around the reservoir. The Rio Grande River corridor is also within reach for additional fishing and exploration. At roughly 9,200 feet in elevation, the campground enjoys cool summer days and crisp nights, making it a welcome escape from lowland heat.
