Our Take
What makes BRIDGER LAKE CAMPGROUND special
Perched at 9,400 feet on the northern slope of Utah's Uinta Mountains, Bridger Lake Campground is high-country camping at its finest. The air is thin and clean, the nights are bracingly cool even in July, and the surrounding landscape of alpine meadows, dense spruce forests, and glacier-carved lakes feels a world apart from the desert valleys below. Bridger Lake itself is a beautiful, modest-sized mountain lake ideal for non-motorized boating, float-tube fishing, and quiet shoreline picnics. The 32 sites are spread through the surrounding forest, offering solid shade and a strong sense of privacy. Brook trout fishing draws a devoted following here, and anglers who time their visit right can have an exceptional outing. The elevation dictates a short season, generally from late June through September, with snow possible at either end. July and August are the most dependable months, though even then, afternoon thunderstorms roll through regularly, so waterproof layers are essential. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis, and given the relatively remote location, midweek visits offer the best chance at snagging a prime lakeside spot. Getting here requires a drive on forest roads from the Evanston, Wyoming area, so higher-clearance vehicles are recommended. The journey itself is part of the reward, winding through some of the most dramatic alpine scenery in the Intermountain West.
