Our Take

What makes BUFFALO CAMPGROUND special

About an hour's drive southwest of Denver in the Buffalo Creek Recreation Area, Buffalo Campground is the kind of unassuming Front Range escape that locals quietly guard as their own. The 37 sites are spread beneath a mixed canopy of ponderosa pine and Douglas fir, with the gurgling soundtrack of Buffalo Creek never far away. The surrounding trail network is legendary among mountain bikers, featuring miles of singletrack that weave through granite formations, open meadows, and stands of aspen that glow gold in September. Hikers and trail runners love the area too, with loops ranging from easy riverside strolls to challenging ridge climbs that reward with views of the distant Continental Divide. The Pike National Forest setting means wildlife encounters are common, from Abert's squirrels leaping between branches to mule deer picking their way through the underbrush at dusk. At roughly 7,400 feet the climate is noticeably cooler than the city, making midsummer afternoons pleasant and evenings downright crisp. For Denver-area residents craving a genuine forest experience without a marathon drive, Buffalo Campground delivers a surprising depth of outdoor recreation in a compact, welcoming package.
