Our Take

What makes BULLTOWN CAMP special

Bulltown Campground sits on the forested edge of Burnsville Lake in the rolling hills of central West Virginia, where history and nature intertwine in a setting that feels genuinely off the beaten path. With 204 sites spread along wooded ridges above the lake, this Army Corps of Engineers campground offers a peaceful retreat defined by Appalachian hardwood forests, quiet coves, and the unhurried rhythm of lake life. Burnsville Lake provides excellent fishing for bass, catfish, crappie, and walleye, with boat launches and a marina nearby for easy water access. The surrounding landscape is laced with hiking trails, including paths that pass through the historic Bulltown area, a site of Civil War skirmishes and earlier frontier settlement whose story is preserved through interpretive exhibits and a reconstructed heritage village. The campground features a mix of electric and primitive sites, many with lake views and enough tree cover to keep summer afternoons comfortably shaded. Central West Virginia's scenic byways put additional attractions within easy reach, from the covered bridges of the region to the whitewater rivers that have made the state famous. Bulltown operates from spring through fall, with the warmest months seeing the most visitors. Midweek arrivals often find excellent site selection, while weekends from June through August benefit from advance reservations. Autumn here is spectacular, with fiery foliage reflected in the lake's still waters.
