Our Take
What makes CHEMEKETAN CAMPGROUND special
Chemeketan Campground sits near the headwaters of the legendary Salmon River, at the base of Idaho''s Sawtooth Mountain Range in the town of Stanley. The Sawtooth National Recreation Area surrounds the campground with some of the most dramatic mountain scenery in the northern Rockies — jagged granite peaks, alpine lakes, and meadows thick with wildflowers in July. The Salmon River here runs cold and clear, offering excellent fishing for rainbow trout, westslope cutthroat, and the occasional bull trout. The Idaho Centennial Trail passes nearby, connecting to a vast trail network that reaches into the surrounding wilderness areas. Alturas, Perkins, Pettit, and Yellowbelly Lakes are all short drives away, each offering their own fishing, canoeing, and shoreline hiking. Stanley itself is a tiny mountain town that swells with visitors in summer but retains a genuine backcountry character. Nighttime temperatures drop sharply even in midsummer, and frost is possible any month of the year at this elevation. The campground is small and intimate, well-suited to travelers who want proximity to the Sawtooths without the crowds of Redfish Lake.
