Our Take
What makes CHRISTMAS MEADOWS CAMPGROUND special
Just a few miles off the Mirror Lake Scenic Byway and about 36 miles south of Evanston, Wyoming, Christmas Meadows Campground is a small, enchanting retreat tucked into the western Uinta Mountains. With only 12 sites, this campground has an intimate, almost secret feel that sets it apart from the larger, busier stops along the byway. The meadows that give the campground its name are genuinely magical, wide expanses of wildflowers framed by dark stands of spruce and fir, with the Stillwater Fork of the Bear River winding quietly through the valley. Moose sightings are common here, especially in the early morning and evening hours, so keep your camera handy and your food stored properly. Hikers will find excellent trail access nearby, including routes into the High Uintas Wilderness, where rugged peaks, alpine lakes, and backcountry solitude await. Fishing along the Stillwater Fork is rewarding for those with patience and a light touch. The season is short at this elevation, typically running from mid-June through mid-September, with July and August offering the best weather. Sites are first-come, first-served and the campground's small size means it can fill by Friday afternoon in peak summer. Arrive early and plan to stay awhile, because once you settle in among these meadows, you will not want to leave.
