Our Take
What makes Crab Orchard Campground special
Few campgrounds in southern Illinois can match the setting of Crab Orchard Campground, where 74 sites stretch along the wooded shoreline of Crab Orchard Lake within the Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge. Wake up to the sound of birdsong, watch great blue herons patrol the shallows, and spend your days fishing, paddling, or simply taking in one of the Midwest's most underappreciated natural landscapes. The campground occupies the northwestern corner of the 44,000-acre refuge, a remarkable mosaic of hardwood forest, grassland, and three major lakes that supports over 200 species of birds and a thriving population of white-tailed deer. Anglers will find the lake well-stocked with largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, and channel catfish, while hikers and cyclists can explore miles of trails and quiet refuge roads. Sites offer a mix of options, including electric hookups at many locations, making Crab Orchard accessible to both tent campers and RV travelers. The campground typically operates from spring through fall, with April through October being the prime window. Spring migration season brings an explosion of warblers and shorebirds, while fall delivers vivid foliage and comfortable temperatures. Located just minutes from Carbondale and the gateway to Shawnee National Forest, Crab Orchard Campground is an ideal base camp for exploring the natural riches of the Illinois Ozarks region.
