Our Take
What makes Deep Creek Campground, Medicine Bow-Routt special
Deep Creek Campground sits at over 10,000 feet in the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest, where Colorado's high country delivers cool summer days, cold starlit nights, and a landscape shaped by alpine meadows and dense spruce-fir forest. With 47 sites near the shores of Sand Lake, this campground is a mountain retreat for those who thrive at elevation and appreciate the short, intense beauty of a Rocky Mountain summer. The season here is brief but memorable. Wildflowers carpet the meadows in July, and the surrounding peaks hold snow well into early summer, feeding the creeks and lake with cold, clear water. Fishing at Sand Lake and nearby streams offers a quiet way to spend a morning, while the network of trails through the national forest opens up opportunities for hiking, horseback riding, and wildlife viewing. Moose, elk, and mule deer frequent the area, and the birdwatching can be excellent. Because of the elevation, summer temperatures rarely feel oppressive -- daytime highs often stay in the sixties and seventies, making this a perfect escape from the heat of the Front Range or the Western Slope. Nights dip into the forties or cooler, so pack layers and a warm sleeping bag. Winter arrives early and lingers late at this altitude. For campers who love the high mountains and do not mind a shorter season, Deep Creek offers a pristine alpine experience that feels far removed from the everyday.
