Our Take

What makes Deer Island special

Deer Island is the kind of campground that demands a little extra effort and rewards you handsomely for it. Accessible only by boat, this 21-site primitive island requires a launch from Salthouse Branch and a reservation to secure your spot — sites are non-site-specific, so you choose your ground upon arrival. The boat-only access creates a natural filter that keeps crowds thin and the atmosphere wonderfully remote. Once on the island, expect a stripped-down camping experience with no hookups and minimal facilities, which is exactly the point. The surrounding water offers fishing, swimming, and paddling, while the island itself invites exploration on foot. The campground operates from April through October, with summer weekends being the busiest and early fall offering warm days with fewer visitors. Bring all your water, food, and supplies since there is no store run from an island. Ensure your boat and motor are in reliable condition before launching. Deer Island is made for adventurous paddlers, fishing groups, and experienced campers who find that the best sites are the ones you cannot drive to.
