About Deerlodge Park Campground
Overview Deerlodge Park Campground is located 51 miles (85 km) east of the Canyon Visitor Center and 80 miles (129 km) from the Quarry Visitor Center. The campground sits on the Yampa River by the boat ramp at the head of Yampa Canyon. Deerlodge Park Campground is open year-round, but winter access can be very difficult due to snow. When the Yampa River exceeds an 18,000 cfs flow rate, the campground will flood. This is typically during the late spring runoff. Before you camp at Deerlodge Park, check the USGS current Yampa River flow rates and the NOAA Yampa river predicted flow rates The campground has seven shady walk-in sites suitable for tents. The sites have tables and fire pits. There is drinking water and vault toilets available seasonally, but no showers. This location is available on a first-come, first-served basis only. Visitors are required to physically arrive at the campground to purchase and claim a site. Once on-site, you can pay for your campsite(s) by scanning a QR code using the Recreation.gov mobile app . Our Take
What makes Deerlodge Park Campground special
Deep in the eastern reaches of Dinosaur National Monument, Deerlodge Park Campground occupies a broad, grassy bench along the Yampa River, 51 miles east of the Canyon Visitor Center near Jensen, Utah. This is one of the most remote campgrounds in the National Park system, and that remoteness is precisely the point. Eight sites are spread across an open meadow fringed by cottonwoods, with canyon walls rising in the distance and the Yampa sliding past in no particular hurry. Deerlodge Park serves as the primary put-in for rafting trips through the Yampa Canyon, one of the last free-flowing rivers in the Colorado River system. Even if you are not running the river, the campground makes an outstanding base for exploring the area on foot or simply soaking in a landscape that has changed remarkably little over the centuries. The best time to visit is late spring through early fall, with May and June being particularly rewarding when the Yampa runs full from snowmelt. Summer heat can be intense, so plan accordingly. The road in is long and unpaved, so check conditions with the monument before making the drive. Given the isolation, you will often find sites available, but bringing everything you need is non-negotiable. No services exist nearby. For those who crave genuine backcountry solitude with a riverside address, Deerlodge Park is hard to beat.
