Our Take
What makes Dewey Lake Campground Shoreline Sites special
Dewey Lake Campground Shoreline Sites offer a back-to-basics camping experience on the shores of Dewey Lake in the hills of eastern Kentucky, near the small community of Van Lear. As the only U.S. Army Corps of Engineers campground on the lake, it holds a special distinction for those who appreciate solitude and a primitive setting without the noise of more developed recreation areas. Ten sites line the shoreline, each positioned to take advantage of lake views and the gentle sounds of water lapping against the bank. The campground is decidedly no-frills, so come prepared to be self-sufficient. There are no hookups and limited amenities, but what you gain in return is an uncrowded lakeside retreat that feels genuinely secluded. The surrounding Appalachian hill country is thick with hardwood forest that lights up in fall with some of the finest foliage in the commonwealth. Fishing is a major draw, with Dewey Lake offering solid bass and crappie opportunities year-round. Small boats and kayaks are perfect for exploring the lake's quiet coves and wooded inlets. Spring and fall are the best seasons to visit, offering mild temperatures and fewer insects. Summer can be warm and humid, though the lake provides natural cooling. Sites are typically first-come, first-served, so weekday arrivals are your best strategy for securing a prime waterfront spot. Bring drinking water and pack out everything you bring in.
