Our Take
What makes EAGLE CREEK CAMPGROUND special
Eagle Creek Campground holds a distinction few campgrounds in America can claim: it was the first developed campground in the entire Forest Service system. Set above Interstate 84 among towering Douglas fir and western red cedar near Hood River, Oregon, this 17-site campground carries more than a century of camping heritage beneath its canopy. The tall trees filter the Pacific Northwest light into soft green columns, and the understory of ferns and moss gives the forest floor a primeval quality that feels timeless. Eagle Creek itself cascades through a dramatic gorge nearby, and the trailhead for the famous Eagle Creek Trail is practically at your doorstep, leading hikers past waterfalls, basalt cliffs, and narrow ledges carved into the canyon walls. The Columbia River Gorge stretches out below, one of the most scenic corridors in the American West, with world-class windsurfing, scenic drives, and wildflower meadows all within easy reach. Despite its proximity to the interstate, the campground feels hushed and sheltered once you settle in among the old trees. Sites are shaded and well-maintained, and the sense of history here adds a layer of meaning to every campfire. Eagle Creek is not just a place to pitch a tent. It is a pilgrimage to where public-land camping began.
