Our Take

What makes EASLEY CAMPGROUND special

Sitting at 6,800 feet along the banks of the Big Wood River just north of Ketchum, Idaho, Easley Campground is a small but perfectly positioned basecamp for exploring the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. With only 10 sites, it offers an intimate camping experience in one of Idaho's most celebrated mountain landscapes. The Big Wood River flows right through the area, its clear waters drawing fly fishers and waders throughout the summer months. The surrounding terrain is classic central Idaho high country, with sagebrush flats giving way to forested hillsides and, beyond them, the dramatic peaks of the Boulder and Smoky Mountains. Fall brings aspen groves ablaze with gold, making September and early October an especially rewarding time to visit. Nearby Ketchum and Sun Valley provide convenient access to restaurants, shops, and supplies, while also offering a lively arts and culture scene that pairs surprisingly well with a week of backcountry camping. The area's trail network is extensive, with options ranging from gentle riverside strolls to challenging peak ascents. Easley's 10 sites go quickly, especially on summer weekends, so plan accordingly. The campground is typically open from June through September, with July and August being the busiest months. Sites are first-come, first-served, and early Friday arrivals are the surest strategy. Pack warm layers for the evenings, as mountain nights at this elevation are refreshingly cool even in midsummer.
