Our Take
What makes ELKS FLAT CAMPGROUND special
Elks Flat Campground occupies a peaceful stretch along the banks of the South Fork Boise River, nestled at the foot of the Trinity Mountain Range about five miles north of the tiny hamlet of Pine, Idaho. The setting is quintessential backcountry Idaho — ponderosa pine and Douglas fir shade the sites while the river glides past, cool and clear, inviting you to wade in or cast a line for mountain whitefish and rainbow trout. The campground serves as a natural launching point for exploring the Boise National Forest, with a web of trails leading into the surrounding mountains for hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking. Wildlife sightings are common; keep your eyes open for mule deer, elk, and the occasional black bear moving through the timber. Sites are well-spaced, offering a genuine sense of solitude even when the campground fills up during the warmer months. Summer through early fall is the prime window, with July and August bringing warm days perfect for river play and cool nights ideal for campfire conversations. Reservations are recommended for weekend visits, as word has spread about this gem. The drive in from Mountain Home follows scenic backcountry roads that set the tone long before you arrive.
