Our Take

What makes FALLS CAMPGROUND special

Falls Campground occupies a prime stretch of riverfront along the Snake River in Idaho's Swan Valley, sitting at a comfortable 5,100 feet of elevation where the air is clean and the scenery is pure mountain West. With 24 sites nestled among cottonwoods and conifers, the campground offers direct access to some of the best trout fishing in the region. The Snake River here runs wide and clear, and anglers regularly pull cutthroat and brown trout from its riffles and pools. The Swan Valley itself is a quiet, pastoral corridor between the Caribou and Big Hole mountain ranges, offering a peaceful alternative to the busier tourist corridors near Jackson Hole and Yellowstone, both of which are within a reasonable day-trip distance. Palisades Reservoir, just upstream, adds boating, waterskiing, and additional fishing opportunities to the mix. Wildlife sightings are common, with moose, elk, and bald eagles frequently spotted along the river. The campground typically opens in late May and runs through September, with July and August being the busiest months. Sites tend to be available midweek even in summer, but weekend reservations are wise. Nights can turn cool at this elevation even in midsummer, so pack layers. A nearby waterfall gives the campground its name and makes for an easy, scenic walk from camp.
