Our Take

What makes FIREFIGHTERS CAMPGROUND special

Nestled in the ponderosa pines of Ashley National Forest just three miles from Flaming Gorge Reservoir, Firefighters Campground is a quiet, forested retreat that keeps the water close without putting you right on the shoreline. The 60 spacious sites are shaded by tall conifers, giving the camp a mountain feel even though the reservoir's boating, fishing, and swimming opportunities are only a short drive away. The campground honors the brave men and women of the wildland firefighting community, and that spirit of service lends the place a grounded, welcoming character. Trails thread through the surrounding forest, perfect for morning jogs, afternoon nature walks, or mountain biking excursions. Wildlife sightings are frequent here: look for mule deer grazing at the forest edge, red-tailed hawks circling overhead, and the occasional osprey heading to or from the reservoir with a fresh catch. Evening campfires crackle under a towering canopy, and the pine-scented air carries a coolness that makes even midsummer nights comfortable. For families, anglers, and outdoor enthusiasts who prefer a woodland setting with easy access to big water recreation, Firefighters is a superb home base within the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area.
