About FLOUR LAKE CAMPGROUND
Overview Flour Lake Campground provides a convenient home base for exploring the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW). Its scenery, amenities and access to outdoor recreation areas make it a popular campground for canoeing, kayaking, boating, and fishing. Superior National Forest, located in northeastern Minnesota's Arrowhead Region, is comprised of 3 million acres. The forest spans 150 miles along the United States-Canada border. Visitors can find recreation opportunities year-round, including travel in the famed Boundary Waters. Recreation The eastern edge of Flour Lake has two separate portages for entering the BWCAW, thus this campground attracts canoe and kayak enthusiasts. Portages link Flour Lake with East Bearskin Lake and Moon Lake. Flour Lake also provides great fishing for bass, walleye and lake trout. Entering the BWCAW requires a permit. Day use permits are available at no charge; inquire at the campground host site. View recreation guides and maps of hiking trails and canoe routes in the national forest. The half-mile Honeymoon Bluff Trail begins a short walk up the road from the campground and offers a great vista of Hungry Jack Lake. Many additional hiking, mountain biking and cross-country ski trails are nearby. Our Take
What makes FLOUR LAKE CAMPGROUND special
Flour Lake Campground occupies a lovely stretch of shoreline on its namesake lake, deep in the Superior National Forest near Grand Marais, Minnesota. With clear water lapping at granite ledges and a thick canopy of pine and birch overhead, the setting feels quintessentially North Woods — wild but welcoming, remote but not inaccessible. This campground strikes an appealing balance between wilderness immersion and creature comforts. Sites are well-spaced among the trees, many offering direct views of the lake, and the facilities are a cut above what you might expect this far from town. A boat ramp provides easy access to Flour Lake's excellent fishing for walleye, northern pike, and smallmouth bass, while several BWCAW entry points lie within a short drive, making this an ideal base camp for day trips or extended canoe expeditions into the Boundary Waters. The campground offers roughly 35 sites, and while it does not always fill to capacity on weekdays, summer weekends can be competitive. Reservations are strongly recommended from June through August. The swimming is refreshing if brisk, and the stargazing on clear nights is nothing short of extraordinary — the nearest city lights are a long way off. Fall color season in late September transforms the surrounding forest into a tapestry of amber and scarlet, making it one of the most scenic times to visit. Plan for cool mornings year-round and pack layers even in midsummer.
