Our Take

What makes GLACIER VIEW CAMPGROUND special

Glacier View Campground lives up to its name in spectacular fashion. Perched at 6,500 feet next to Redfish Lake and framed by the jagged peaks of the Sawtooth Mountain Range, this 64-site campground in central Idaho delivers some of the most breathtaking scenery in the American West. The lake itself is a deep alpine gem, its waters reflecting the granite spires that tower above, and on clear mornings the view from camp is the kind of thing that stops you mid-pour on your coffee. Stanley, a small mountain town with an outsized reputation among outdoor enthusiasts, sits just up the road, offering supplies, dining, and outfitter services. From Glacier View, you can hike into the Sawtooth Wilderness, paddle Redfish Lake by canoe or kayak, fish for sockeye salmon and bull trout, or simply sit on the lakeshore and watch the alpenglow paint the peaks at sunset. The area is also a launching point for whitewater rafting on the Salmon River. The campground is open from roughly June through September, with July and August being peak season. With 64 sites, there is more availability here than at smaller Sawtooth camps, but reservations are still highly recommended for summer weekends. Sites accommodate both tents and RVs. Nights run cool even in midsummer at this elevation, so bring layers. For sheer mountain grandeur paired with lakeside camping, Glacier View is Idaho at its finest.
