Our Take
What makes Hamburger Rock Campground special
Hamburger Rock Campground drops you into one of the most visually arresting landscapes in the American Southwest. Located in the Indian Creek area of Bears Ears National Monument near Monticello, Utah, this 10-site campground is surrounded by towering sandstone walls, desert spires, and the kind of red rock scenery that stops you mid-sentence. The campground takes its name from a distinctive hamburger-shaped rock formation nearby, just one of countless geological curiosities scattered across this ancient terrain. Indian Creek is world-renowned among rock climbers for its perfect splitter cracks, drawing dedicated climbers from around the globe. Even if you never tie into a rope, the area rewards with exceptional hiking, mountain biking along the Lockhart Basin Road, and exploring ancestral Puebloan archaeological sites that dot the canyons and mesas. The cultural and natural significance of Bears Ears National Monument makes every outing here feel like a journey through deep time. Hamburger Rock's 10 sites are spread across open desert terrain, so shade is limited and bringing your own sun protection is essential. Spring and fall are the ideal seasons, when temperatures are comfortable and the desert light paints the rock in warm hues. Summer brings intense heat, while winter can be cold but beautifully quiet. Sites are first come, first served, and the campground can fill quickly during peak climbing season in spring and fall. Plan to arrive early, especially on weekends.
