Our Take
What makes Hanging Rock Campground special
Tucked along Highway 21 between Beaver and Minersville, Hanging Rock Campground sits in a quiet stretch of southwestern Utah where the desert landscape gives way to rugged red rock formations and wide-open sky. With just six sites, this is a campground that rewards those who prefer solitude over spectacle. The terrain here is classic high-desert country, dotted with juniper and sage, and the namesake rock formations lend an almost sculptural quality to the surroundings. Cedar City, a gateway to both Cedar Breaks National Monument and Briar Head Peak, lies a short drive to the south, making Hanging Rock a practical base camp for exploring the region. Zion National Park and Kolob Canyons are also within striking distance for day trips. Stargazing is exceptional here, far from city light pollution, and the sunsets across the open basin are worth lingering for. Because of its small size, Hanging Rock fills quickly during peak summer weekends, so arriving early or midweek is a smart move. Spring and fall offer the most comfortable temperatures and fewer visitors. Summer days can run hot, but evenings cool down nicely at this elevation. There are no hookups or potable water on site, so come prepared with everything you need. This is a place for campers who like their nights quiet and their horizons unbroken.
