Our Take
What makes HIDEOUT CANYON BOAT-IN CAMPGROUND special
Hideout Canyon Boat-In Campground is exactly what the name promises: a remote 18-site retreat on the shores of Flaming Gorge Reservoir, accessible only by water and tucked two miles from the nearest road. That buffer of open lake is what makes this place special. There are no car doors slamming at midnight, no generators humming at dawn. Instead, you wake to the lap of waves against red sandstone, the cry of an osprey overhead, and a silence so complete it resets something inside you. The campground occupies a sheltered cove along the reservoir, where layered canyon walls rise in bands of rust, cream, and burnt sienna above water so clear you can watch trout glide beneath your boat. Sites are spaced along the shoreline with natural privacy provided by rock outcrops and scattered juniper, and each one offers direct water access for swimming, fishing, and simply floating in the afternoon sun. Evening brings reliably stunning sunsets that light the canyon walls on fire, followed by a canopy of stars that rivals anything in the Mountain West. Hideout Canyon rewards the extra effort it takes to reach it. Loading the boat, crossing the reservoir, and pulling into this quiet cove is a ritual that marks the boundary between your regular life and something wilder. For those willing to make the journey, it is one of the most memorable campgrounds in Utah.
