Our Take

What makes KENOSHA PASS CAMPGROUND special

Perched at nearly 10,000 feet along the celebrated Colorado Trail, Kenosha Pass Campground is one of the Front Range's most rewarding mountain retreats. The drive in sets the tone immediately, as the road climbs through dense aspen groves that erupt into gold every autumn, drawing photographers and leaf-peepers from across the state. This small, intimate campground is ideal for families seeking a genuine mountain experience without the crowds of more developed resorts. The Colorado Trail crosses right through the area, giving hikers direct access to alpine meadows, ridgeline panoramas, and wildflower-strewn valleys. In summer, the surrounding Pike National Forest hums with birdsong and the rustle of aspens in the breeze. Kenosha Pass offers about 25 sites tucked among the trees, with vault toilets and no hookups or water, so pack in everything you need. Reservations are recommended for weekend stays from June through September, and they become essential during the peak fall color season in late September. Summer days are mild and pleasant at this elevation, though nights can dip well below freezing even in July, so bring warm layers. The campground typically opens in late May and closes by mid-October, depending on snowfall. For a quiet weeknight under the stars at the edge of the Continental Divide, few spots compare.
