Our Take

What makes Log Gulch Campground special

Log Gulch Campground stretches along the shores of Holter Lake about 45 miles north of Helena, Montana, placing you squarely in some of the most scenic country the upper Missouri River corridor has to offer. With 75 sites, it is one of the larger campgrounds in the area, yet the mix of wooded loops and waterfront spots means you never feel stacked on top of anyone. The Gates of the Mountains Wilderness is just across the water — the same limestone cliffs that awed Lewis and Clark — and boat tours run regularly in summer. Fishing for walleye and trout on Holter Lake is consistently productive, and the Sleeping Giant Wilderness Study Area provides excellent hiking with panoramic ridgetop views. All sites are reservation-only, so plan ahead, especially for July and August weekends. Spring and fall bring fewer crowds, good fishing, and a chance to spot eagles and osprey working the lake. This is an excellent choice for families, boaters, and anglers who want a well-organized campground with serious natural attractions within easy reach.
