Our Take
What makes Longleaf Campground special
Longleaf Campground is your front door to one of the most remarkable wild places on the East Coast. Situated just off the park entrance road in Congaree National Park near Hopkins, South Carolina, this 16-site campground puts you steps away from the largest intact expanse of old-growth bottomland hardwood forest in the southeastern United States. Towering loblolly pines, massive bald cypresses, and ancient hardwoods form a canopy so dense and lush that walking the boardwalk trails feels like stepping into another century. The campground itself sits on slightly higher ground within a mixed hardwood forest, keeping things comfortable even when the floodplain below is doing what floodplains do. Birders will be in paradise -- Congaree hosts an astonishing diversity of species, from barred owls calling at dusk to prothonotary warblers flashing gold along the waterways. Paddling Cedar Creek is a must if water levels cooperate, offering a serene float through cathedral-like swamp corridors. Facilities are modest but well-kept, and the lack of an entrance fee makes Congaree one of the best bargains in the national park system. Come for the trees, stay for the fireflies in late May, and leave with a deeper appreciation for what a Southern forest can be.
