Our Take
What makes Lower Little Bear Campground special
There is something deeply restful about a campground that lives in the shade. Lower Little Bear Campground sits beneath a generous canopy of mixed conifers right alongside Huntington Creek, where the sound of moving water becomes the backdrop to everything you do. Located on the Huntington Canyon National Scenic Byway in the Manti-La Sal National Forest, this is one of several small gems strung along Utah Highway 31 between the desert lowlands and the crest of the Wasatch Plateau. The sites here are shaded and well-maintained, arranged close enough to the creek that you can hear it from your picnic table but set back enough to feel nestled in the forest. Fishing is the main draw, with Huntington Creek offering solid catch-and-release trout opportunities. The scenic byway itself is worth the drive, climbing through aspen groves that turn electric gold in September. Lower Little Bear works beautifully as a base camp for exploring the surrounding high country, including nearby Ferron Reservoir and the trails that lace through the plateau. The campground operates seasonally, generally from late May through September, depending on snowpack. Sites go on a first-come, first-served basis and rarely feel crowded midweek. Bring a good book, a fishing rod, and a willingness to slow down.
