Our Take
What makes LUCERNE CAMPGROUND special
Perched right on the shore of Flaming Gorge Reservoir at 6,100 feet, Lucerne Campground is the kind of place where you wake up, unzip your tent, and see turquoise water stretching toward red-rock canyon walls. With 139 sites ranging from shaded pull-throughs for big rigs to cozy tent pads near the waterline, it is one of the largest and most popular camps in the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area, and for good reason. A full-service marina sits within walking distance, putting powerboating, water skiing, and trophy lake trout fishing right at your fingertips. Anglers routinely pull Mackinaw topping 30 pounds from the deep, cold waters here. When you are not on the water, miles of desert hiking trails wind through juniper and piñon country, offering sweeping views of the reservoir and the Uinta Mountains beyond. The high-desert air means warm, dry days and cool evenings that practically beg for a campfire. Sunsets paint the canyon in shades of amber and crimson, and once the sky goes dark the stargazing is extraordinary. Lucerne strikes a welcome balance between accessibility and wildness, making it equally suited for a weekend family getaway or a week-long boating adventure in northern Utah.
