Our Take
What makes MARSH LAKE CAMPGROUND special
Marsh Lake Campground sits at a lofty 9,400 feet on the northern slope of Utah's Uinta Mountains, one of the few major ranges in the Lower 48 that runs east to west. With 50 sites spread through a subalpine forest of Engelmann spruce and lodgepole pine, this campground offers a genuine high-country experience without requiring a long backcountry hike to reach it. Marsh Lake itself is a small, serene alpine lake just a short walk from camp, popular for float-tube fishing and quiet shoreline casting for brook trout. The surrounding Uinta landscape is dotted with dozens of similar lakes, many accessible by trail, making this an outstanding base for day hikes and fishing expeditions. The Highline Trail, one of Utah's premier backpacking routes, is accessible from nearby trailheads and traverses a stunning alpine plateau above treeline. Evanston, Wyoming, is the nearest town for supplies, sitting north of the mountains along Interstate 80. The campground typically opens in late June or early July, once snowmelt clears the access roads, and closes by mid-September. At this elevation, summer days are cool and comfortable while nights regularly dip into the thirties, so warm layers and a good sleeping bag are essential. Sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis and tend to fill on summer weekends, so midweek visits are your best bet for solitude. For high-elevation lake camping in a mountain range that feels refreshingly uncrowded, Marsh Lake is a real treasure.
