Our Take

What makes MEADOWS GROUP CAMPGROUND special

Meadows Group Campground lies roughly 45 miles southwest of Denver in the Pike National Forest, near the small community of Buffalo Creek. It occupies a quiet, forested valley where ponderosa pine and Douglas fir provide generous shade and a genuine sense of seclusion, despite the campground being a reasonable drive from the metro area. The Buffalo Creek area is a magnet for mountain bikers, with a network of singletrack trails that wind through rolling terrain and granite outcroppings. Hikers will find equally rewarding routes, and the nearby South Platte River corridor is well known among fly fishers chasing trout in Gold Medal waters. The Colorado Trail passes through the region too, offering the chance to walk a stretch of one of the state's most celebrated long-distance paths. Meadows is configured for group use, so it works well for organized outings, corporate retreats, and large family gatherings. Reservations are required and should be made well ahead of peak season, which runs from late May through September. The campground provides picnic tables, fire rings, and vault toilets. Water availability can vary, so plan to bring your own. At roughly 7,500 feet, the site enjoys pleasant summer temperatures, though afternoon thunderstorms are a regular occurrence. Pack rain gear and a flexible attitude. Meadows Group Campground is a solid pick for groups wanting mountain air without a marathon drive from Denver.
