Our Take

What makes MOKINS BAY CAMPGROUND special

Situated near the eastern shore of Hayden Lake in the foothills of the Bitterroot Mountains, Mokins Bay Campground offers a refreshing lakeside escape in the forests of northwestern Idaho. The campground is framed by a handsome mix of ponderosa pine, Douglas fir, and western larch, with sites that provide a comfortable balance of shade and openness. Hayden Lake is a gem of the Idaho panhandle, its clean waters stretching for miles and inviting swimmers, kayakers, and boaters to spend long summer days on the water. Anglers will find largemouth bass, perch, and northern pike patrolling the shallows, while deeper water holds rainbow trout and lake trout. A small beach area near the campground gives families an easy place to splash and play, and the surrounding forest trails are perfect for morning walks or mountain bike rides. The best time to visit is June through September, when the lake is warm enough for swimming and the days are long and sunny. Shoulder-season visits in May and October reward campers with peaceful solitude and the chance to watch migratory birds passing through. Mokins Bay is an excellent choice for lake-loving families, casual anglers, and anyone drawn to the laid-back pace of small-lake camping in Idaho's beautiful northern mountains.
