Our Take
What makes MOON LAKE GROUP CAMPGROUND special
Moon Lake Group Campground rests on the forested shores of Moon Lake, a scenic alpine gem tucked into the southern slope of the Uinta Mountains near Duchesne, Utah. The lake sits at around 8,100 feet, surrounded by dense stands of spruce, fir, and aspen that blaze gold in early autumn. The water is clear, cold, and stocked with trout, making it a favorite among anglers who appreciate casting a line in a setting that feels genuinely remote. The campground is designed for group use, making it an ideal gathering spot for family reunions, church groups, and outdoor clubs. Sites are spacious enough to accommodate larger parties, with picnic tables, fire rings, and access to vault toilets. A boat ramp on the lake supports non-motorized and small motorized watercraft, and canoes and kayaks are a wonderful way to explore the shoreline and quiet inlets. Hiking trails fan out from the lake into the High Uintas Wilderness, where alpine meadows, rocky ridgelines, and additional mountain lakes reward those willing to put in the miles. Wildlife sightings are common, from mule deer and moose to the occasional black bear. The campground is generally open from June through September. Reservations are required for group sites and should be secured early, as summer weekends book up quickly. Nights are cool at this elevation, so pack warm layers regardless of the season.
