Our Take

What makes NORTH FORK CAMPGROUND special

North Fork Campground is the kind of place that reminds you why Colorado draws millions of visitors to its high country every year. Set at 7,800 feet on the western slope of the Rockies near Meeker, the campground rests in a towering aspen grove that transforms with the seasons — fresh green canopies in summer, shimmering gold in autumn, and a quiet, cathedral-like stillness that makes the whole forest feel like your own. The North Fork of the White River runs nearby, offering trout fishing in a setting so picturesque it barely seems real. Trails in the surrounding White River National Forest lead through meadows, along ridgelines, and into the Flat Tops Wilderness, one of Colorado's largest and least-visited wilderness areas. Elk, mule deer, and black bears roam the surrounding timber, and the area is well known among hunters during fall seasons. The campground has a manageable number of sites, keeping the atmosphere intimate and peaceful. Peak season runs from late June through September, with fall color typically peaking in late September and drawing photographers and leaf-peepers from across the state. Weekends fill up, so plan ahead and reserve if you can. Meeker, a small ranching town with genuine western character, is a short drive away for supplies and a taste of rural Colorado hospitality.
