Our Take
What makes OLIVE RIDGE special
Olive Ridge Campground sits at 8,350 feet within the Roosevelt National Forest, tucked against the southeastern edge of Rocky Mountain National Park near the town of Allenspark, Colorado. The campground serves as one of the best-positioned base camps for exploring the Wild Basin area of RMNP, where trails lead to Ouzel Falls, Thunder Lake, and a network of alpine lakes beneath the Continental Divide. The Finch Lake and Sandbeach Lake trailheads are also nearby. Sites are spread beneath a dense canopy of lodgepole pine and spruce, offering privacy and cool shade at altitude. South Saint Vrain Creek runs through the area, adding a gentle soundtrack to camp life. Evenings cool off quickly at this elevation, making campfires a nightly ritual. While Estes Park draws the majority of RMNP visitors to the north side, Olive Ridge provides a quieter southern approach with less traffic and more elbow room. The campground typically opens in late May and closes after Labor Day. It operates on a reservation system, and weekend spots fill quickly through the summer, so planning ahead pays off.
