Our Take

What makes Oregon Inlet Campground special

Oregon Inlet Campground is where the Outer Banks meet the wild Atlantic, offering 236 sites on a narrow ribbon of barrier island within Cape Hatteras National Seashore. As the northernmost campground on the Seashore, it sits just south of the full-service town of Nags Head, giving campers rare access to both untamed coastline and everyday conveniences like restaurants, grocery stores, and outfitters. The setting is pure Outer Banks magic: oceanside sites look out over rolling dunes to the open Atlantic, while soundside spots face the calm marshes of Pamlico Sound, where sunsets paint the sky in shades no photograph can capture. Surf fishing is legendary here, with red drum, bluefish, and flounder running seasonal migrations just offshore. The nearby Oregon Inlet Fishing Center is a hub for charter boats heading to the Gulf Stream. Wind and kitesurfing enthusiasts consider this stretch of coast world-class. The campground is open seasonally from spring through fall, with no hookups and a first-come, first-served overflow philosophy that rewards early arrivals, especially on summer weekends. Reservations are available and highly recommended from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Spring and fall shoulder seasons bring migratory shorebirds, comfortable temperatures, and that rare gift of an uncrowded beach on the Outer Banks.
