Our Take
What makes OUTLET CAMPGROUND special
Outlet Campground sits at the foot of Redfish Lake, one of the most photographed bodies of water in Idaho, with the jagged granite spires of the Sawtooth Mountain Range rising dramatically behind it. At 6,500 feet in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area near Stanley, the campground places you at the doorstep of some of the most spectacular alpine scenery in the American West. The lake itself stretches over two miles, its impossibly clear water shifting between shades of turquoise and deep sapphire depending on the light. Swimming, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding are popular in the warmer months, and a water taxi shuttles hikers to trailheads at the far end of the lake that access the Sawtooth Wilderness. Fishing for bull trout, sockeye salmon viewing during late summer spawning runs, and simply sitting on the shore watching the peaks catch the last light of day are all part of the experience here. The campground is located where Redfish Lake Creek flows out of the lake, offering pleasant sites beneath lodgepole pines and firs. This is one of the most popular campgrounds in central Idaho, so reservations are essential, particularly for July and August weekends. The season generally runs from June through September. Stanley, a tiny mountain town with big character, is just a few miles north for supplies, hot springs, and hearty meals after a day on the trail.
