Our Take

What makes Perch Lake Campground special

Five and a half miles north of Drummond in the heart of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, Perch Lake Campground has been a family favorite for good reason. This 16-site campground sits on the shores of its namesake lake, a quiet body of water that feels purpose-built for lazy summer afternoons with a canoe paddle in hand and nowhere particular to be. The surrounding forest is classic northern Wisconsin -- towering red pines, paper birch, and a ground layer of ferns that turns the woods into a green velvet carpet by June. Kids love this place because the lake is calm and approachable, the trails are gentle enough for short legs, and there is a reliable sense of discovery in every fallen log and frog-filled marsh along the shore. Adults love it because the sites are well-spaced, the nights are deeply quiet, and the forest canopy filters the light into something that makes even ordinary camp meals feel a little magical. Fishing for panfish and bass is steady, and the surrounding forest roads are ideal for cycling or a slow evening drive to spot white-tailed deer. Perch Lake is unpretentious, welcoming, and exactly the kind of place that becomes a family tradition.
