Our Take
What makes Pinon Campground (Quemado Lake) special
Pinon Campground sits just two miles from Quemado Lake in the sprawling Gila National Forest, giving campers a forested retreat with easy access to one of western New Mexico's best-kept fishing holes. The 25 sites include a mix of first-come-first-served and reservable group areas, so whether you are planning a spontaneous getaway or organizing a larger gathering, there is room for you. Mature pinon and juniper trees provide welcome shade throughout the camp, and evening campfires under the vast, dark New Mexico sky are practically mandatory. Spring and fall bring the most comfortable temperatures, though summer monsoon season adds dramatic sunsets and greener landscapes. Pets are welcome, which is a big plus for those who camp with four-legged companions. Stock up on supplies in Quemado before heading out, as services are limited once you leave town. Pinon Campground is an excellent choice for anglers, families with dogs, and anyone seeking a relaxed, shaded camp in genuinely uncrowded high-desert country.
