Our Take
What makes POINT CAMPGROUND special
Sitting at the edge of Redfish Lake beneath the jagged granite spires of the Sawtooth Mountain Range, Point Campground is one of those places that stops you in your tracks the moment you arrive. At 6,500 feet of elevation near Stanley, Idaho, the 16 sites occupy a forested point that juts into the crystal-clear lake, offering campers direct access to some of the most stunning alpine scenery in the Northern Rockies. The water glows an almost impossible shade of blue-green, reflecting the sawtooth ridgeline that gives the range its name. Redfish Lake is the centerpiece of the experience. Swimming, paddleboarding, kayaking, and fishing fill the long summer days, while a network of trails radiates outward into the Sawtooth Wilderness for day hikes or multi-day backpacking trips. The Redfish Lake Lodge, just up the shore, offers boat rentals and a lakeside restaurant for those evenings when camp cooking loses its appeal. With only 16 sites and a reputation that precedes it, Point Campground is one of the most competitive reservations in Idaho. Summer bookings open months in advance and disappear within minutes, so mark your calendar and be ready. The prime season stretches from late June through early September. Nights are cool even in midsummer at this elevation, so pack warm layers and enjoy some of the clearest stargazing skies you will ever find.
