Our Take
What makes POKEGAMA DAM CAMPGROUND special
Located in the heart of northern Minnesota's legendary lake country, Pokegama Dam Campground offers a front-door connection to some of the finest freshwater recreation in the Upper Midwest. The campground sits right next to the Mississippi River near its headwaters, adjacent to the historic Pokegama Dam, and provides easy access to Pokegama Lake and the broader network of rivers and lakes that define the Grand Rapids area. Fishing is the headline attraction here, with walleye, northern pike, and panfish drawing anglers from across Minnesota and beyond. Boaters can launch directly onto the river or explore miles of interconnected waterways, while paddlers enjoy scenic stretches of the young Mississippi as it winds through boreal forest. The landscape is quintessential northwoods: birch and pine forests, granite outcrops, and water in every direction. Summer is peak season, with warm days, long twilights, and superb fishing conditions making June through August the most popular months. Early fall delivers spectacular foliage and world-class muskie fishing for those willing to brave cooler mornings. The campground appeals to dedicated anglers, canoeing families, and anyone who finds peace in the rhythm of water lapping against a dock at dusk. Its proximity to Grand Rapids means supplies, restaurants, and the Judy Garland Museum are all just minutes away, adding a touch of small-town charm to your northwoods adventure.
