Our Take

What makes PONDEROSA CAMPGROUND special

Ponderosa Campground is a peaceful riverside retreat along the Nacimiento River in the Los Padres National Forest of California's Central Coast. The campground is named for the stately ponderosa pines that shade many of the sites, and the overall setting blends oak woodland, open meadows, and the gentle sounds of the river into a thoroughly relaxing camping experience. It is the kind of place where time slows down and the simple pleasures of swimming, fishing, and sitting by the water take center stage. The Nacimiento River runs through the heart of the campground area, creating inviting swimming holes that are especially popular with families during the warm summer months. The fishing is casual and enjoyable, with opportunities to cast for smallmouth bass and other species in the pools and riffles. Surrounding trails offer pleasant walks through the forest, and the broader Los Padres National Forest provides countless miles of backcountry hiking for those seeking more ambitious outings. Ponderosa is typically open from late spring through early fall, with summer being the peak season when the swimming holes are at their most inviting. Sites tend to be first-come, first-served, and weekday visits offer the best chance at snagging a prime riverside spot. The campground is somewhat remote, so packing in all supplies is wise. Lake Nacimiento and the coastal towns of Cambria and San Simeon are within reasonable driving distance for day trips. For a low-key, nature-centered escape with river access at your doorstep, Ponderosa is a real treasure.
