Our Take

What makes REDMAN CAMPGROUND special

Nestled high in Big Cottonwood Canyon at 8,300 feet of elevation, Redman Campground offers a mountain escape that feels remarkably far from civilization yet sits just 25 miles from downtown Salt Lake City. The 47 sites are spread among a mature forest of Engelmann spruce and subalpine fir, with the cool, clean air of the Wasatch Range settling over camp each evening. The canyon walls rise steeply on either side, creating a dramatic corridor of rock and forest that changes character with every season. The location is hard to beat for convenience. Brighton and Solitude ski resorts are just up the road, and in summer their slopes transform into excellent hiking and mountain biking terrain. The Guardsman Pass road connects Big Cottonwood Canyon to Park City, opening up even more possibilities for day trips. Closer to camp, short trails lead to wildflower meadows and quiet creeks, and the fishing in the canyon streams can be surprisingly productive. Redman accommodates both tents and RVs across its well-maintained loops, though hookups are not available. Because of its proximity to Salt Lake City, the campground sees heavy weekend traffic from late May through October, so midweek visits are the way to enjoy a more relaxed atmosphere. Reservations are essential during summer months. Fall brings spectacular color to the canyon as the maples and aspens turn, making September and early October a particularly rewarding time to visit.
