About SHEEP TRAIL CAMPGROUND
Overview Sheep Trail Campground is located at an elevation of 6,670 feet in a beautiful valley at the foot of the Sawtooth Mountain Range in central Idaho. Recreation Sheep Trail is situated in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. A myriad of excellent hiking and biking opportunities are available, with an estimated 750 miles of trails crisscrossing the valley and surrounding mountains, including the nearby Idaho Centennial Trail. Expansive and scenic Elk Meadow is near the campground, providing a great location for bird and wildlife watching. Facilities Sheep Trail is situated in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. Expansive and scenic Elk Meadow is near the campground, providing a great location for bird and wildlife watching. Natural Features Summer wildflowers are plentiful and a mixed stand of pines provides partial shade. A small creek runs next to the campground. Temperatures are cool, with an average summer high of 78 degrees and a low of 40 degrees. Nearby Attractions Numerous sparkling lakes and streams, including the Salmon River, dot the area, making for great rainbow and native Westslope cutthroat trout fishing. Stanley and Redfish Lakes are nearby, offering excellent boating, water skiing, canoeing, kayaking and fishing. Popular area events include an Arts and Crafts Fair in July, and Wagon Days, Salmon Festival, Quilt Fair and Fireman's Ball in September.

Small, secluded, and perched at 6,670 feet in a quiet valley at the foot of the Sawtooth Mountain Range, Sheep Trail Campground is about as close to a backcountry experience as you can get without leaving your vehicle behind. With just 5 sites in Idaho's Sawtooth National Recreation Area, this is a campground for those who value solitude over amenities and wide-open mountain scenery over crowded lakeshores. The valley floor is carpeted with sagebrush and wildflowers, hemmed in by forested ridges that give way to the raw granite peaks of the Sawtooths above. The Sawtooth NRA is a world-class destination for hikers, anglers, and wildlife watchers. Trails from the surrounding area lead into the Sawtooth Wilderness, where alpine lakes sit in glacial cirques beneath some of Idaho's most dramatic summits. The Salmon River and its tributaries run through the broader valley, offering excellent fly fishing opportunities. Elk, mule deer, and the occasional mountain goat are regular visitors to the area. With only 5 sites, Sheep Trail rarely fills to capacity, but that is part of its charm. Facilities are minimal, so bring everything you need and pack out what you carry in. The season is short at this elevation, generally running from late June through September, with July and August offering the most reliable weather. Nights are cool to cold year-round, and thunderstorms can roll through on summer afternoons, so come prepared for mountain conditions.

From Stanley, Idaho, take State Highway 21 west for approximately 10 miles. Turn south between mileposts 121 and 122. Take Forest Road 613 to Sheep Trail Campground, located adjacent to State Highway 21.
