Our Take

What makes STEEL CREEK GROUP CAMPGROUND special

Steel Creek Group Campground occupies a quiet mountain setting 35 miles northeast of Dubois, Idaho, where the landscape transitions from open sagebrush valleys into the timbered foothills of the Centennial Mountains. The single group site can accommodate larger parties looking for a base from which to explore a network of trails for hiking, mountain biking, ATV riding, and horseback riding. Hunting is popular in fall when elk and mule deer move through the surrounding high country. The campground is surrounded by willow and pine trees with views of the nearby peaks that mark the Montana border. Silver Creek and other small streams in the area offer decent trout fishing through the summer months. The remote location means light pollution is minimal — stargazing here on a clear night reveals the Milky Way in stunning detail. Snow lingers into June at this elevation, so the season runs roughly from late June through September. The nearest services are in Kilgore (9 miles) or Dubois, so come prepared with supplies. This is backcountry Idaho at its quietest.
