Our Take

What makes SUNRISE CAMPGROUND special

Sunrise Campground perches at 7,800 feet near Bear Lake Summit, just six miles west of Garden City and the turquoise waters of Bear Lake in northern Utah. The 29 sites include standard tent and RV pads plus a handful of yurts — a rare amenity that extends the camping season and offers a comfortable option for families not ready to fully rough it. Bear Lake itself straddles the Utah-Idaho border and is known for its distinctive Caribbean-blue color, caused by suspended limestone particles in the water. Boating, water skiing, and swimming are the main summer activities on the lake, while the campground''s higher elevation provides cooler temperatures and mountain scenery as a contrast. The Limber Pine Trail, a gentle one-mile loop, starts just half a mile from camp and leads to a 500-year-old limber pine. Bear Lake Summit, one mile away, offers panoramic overlook picnic tables and interpretive displays. The campground is run by the Cache-Wasatch National Forest and typically opens in late May. Winter closes the campground but opens the surrounding area to snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. Raspberry milkshakes from the roadside stands in Garden City are a local tradition.
