Our Take
What makes Swasey's Beach Campground special
Swasey's Beach Campground sits right on the banks of the Green River in eastern Utah, directly across the water from the whitewater of Swasey's Rapids. It is one of those rare campgrounds where the scenery does all the talking: layered sandstone bluffs rise above the river corridor, cottonwoods line the shore, and the sound of rapids carries into camp day and night. The twelve sites are spread along the riverbank near Price, offering front-row access to one of Utah's most storied waterways. This is a prime launching point for float trips through Desolation and Gray Canyons, two of the most celebrated stretches of river in the American West. Kayakers, canoeists, and rafters use Swasey's Beach as a put-in or take-out, and even if you are not running the river, the fishing for channel catfish and smallmouth bass can be excellent. The surrounding desert landscape invites exploration on foot, with side canyons and geological formations visible in every direction. The campground is open year-round, though spring and fall offer the most comfortable temperatures for camping in this high-desert environment. Summer days can be hot, but evenings cool down nicely along the water. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring, with vault toilets available. There are no hookups or potable water. Sites are first-come, first-served, and the campground sees its heaviest use during river-running season from May through September.
