Our Take

What makes TRAP CREEK CAMPGROUND special

Trap Creek Campground sits in a beautiful high-mountain valley within the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, where the towering granite spires of the Sawtooth Range dominate the western skyline and meadows stretch out in every direction. This is Idaho at its most iconic, a landscape of crystalline creeks, lodgepole pine forests, and wildflower-dotted clearings that glow golden in the long summer evenings. The campground takes its name from Trap Creek, which meanders through the area on its way to join the larger drainages feeding the Salmon River watershed. Anglers will find willing trout in nearby streams and lakes, while hikers have access to a vast network of trails leading into the Sawtooth Wilderness, where more than three hundred alpine lakes lie tucked beneath jagged peaks. Mountain biking, horseback riding, and wildlife spotting round out the warm-season activities, and the nearby Sunbeam Hot Springs offer a soothing soak after a long day on the trail. The camping season generally runs from late June through mid-September, with July and August being the busiest months. Sites tend to operate on a first-come, first-served basis, and arriving early on Friday is the surest way to secure a spot on summer weekends. Nights are cool at this elevation even in midsummer, so bring warm layers. The small town of Stanley, just a short drive away, provides basic groceries, fuel, and outfitter services.
