About WEST FORK CAMPGROUND
Overview West Fork Campground sits near the West Fork San Juan River in a secluded 10-acre area, just over a mile from Highway 160. Visitors enjoy the area for its hiking opportunities and plentiful solitude. Recreation The West Fork and nearby Wolf Creek offer fishing opportunities, but are heavily fished streams. Only skilled and patient fishermen have much luck in these waters. The West Fork Trail, also known as the Rainbow Trail, leads into the Weminuche Wilderness from a trailhead a mile beyond the campground. The first portion of the trail passes through private property, so please stay on the trail and leave the gates as you find them. Our Take
What makes WEST FORK CAMPGROUND special
Tucked away in a quiet corner of the San Juan National Forest, West Fork Campground sits near the headwaters of the West Fork of the San Juan River in a setting that feels genuinely remote despite being accessible from Highway 160. Tall spruce and aspen enclose the campground, and the gentle murmur of the river is the soundtrack to every stay. This is a place built for solitude seekers — the kind of camp where you can read a book by the creek, cast a dry fly into a pocket of still water, and never see another soul for hours. The river offers fine small-stream trout fishing, with brook and brown trout occupying the riffles and undercut banks. Hikers can follow forest roads and trails deeper into the surrounding mountains, where meadows blanket the high country with wildflowers in July and early August. Wildlife sightings are common, from mule deer browsing at dawn to the occasional turkey or elk moving through the trees. The best months to visit are June through September, when the mountain roads are clear and nights are cool but comfortable. West Fork Campground is perfect for anglers, solitude lovers, and anyone who measures a great camping trip by how far they feel from civilization.
