Our Take
What makes West Point Campground special
Set along the northwest shore of Union Valley Reservoir in the Crystal Basin Recreation Area of El Dorado National Forest, West Point Campground offers one of the more scenic lakeside camping experiences in the northern Sierra Nevada. With 22 sites ranging from single to triple capacity, the campground accommodates everything from solo adventurers to extended family gatherings. The reservoir is the main attraction here, and for good reason. Surrounded by granite slopes and mixed conifer forest, Union Valley stretches across more than 2,800 surface acres at an elevation near 4,900 feet. Swimming, boating, water skiing, and fishing for rainbow trout and kokanee salmon keep visitors busy from morning to evening. Several sites offer views of the water or short walks to the shoreline. Beyond the lake, the Crystal Basin area provides access to a network of trails, including paths leading to smaller alpine lakes and meadows blanketed with wildflowers in early summer. The drive up from the Sacramento Valley is itself a pleasure, climbing through oak woodlands into fragrant pine forests. West Point Campground strikes a fine balance between accessibility and mountain atmosphere. It is close enough to civilization for a weekend trip, yet remote enough to feel like a genuine escape into the Sierra high country.
